David-Michael: I have inherited
these photos from Humphrey Household, second master at Westbrook House until, I believe, it merged with Dover
College Junior School.
I saw a lot of him in his later years until he died aged 90 on Jan 12th 1996 in Oxfordshire. (He was the brother of Geoffrey
Household, the author of Rogue Male and other novels).
The first photo is dated
26.6.1949 and says on the back: At Hythe, half term [Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway]. The two Gladstone sisters, Ricky Metcalfe, Patrick Gabbett, Walmsley, John Metcalfe, alongside "Hercules".
The three next photos are
all dated 12.06.1949 and are annotated:
Some of the boys’ gardens
K.N.G. Foster with boys tidying
the field, Sunday evening.
A Sunday afternoon,
boys with Jacko, a young jackdaw.
I hope these are of some
interest to old boys, older than you or me!
Best wishes

Peter Mellor Writes:Westbrook House Sports Day circa 1955.
The runners include:- Paxton, Smailes, Richard Tittle, Crowe, Scott, Charles Beaugie, Nigel Harland, Nicky Marshall, Peter
Mellor, Higgins. My memory is fading on the others. The clothes worn by runners and spectators is very 1950's !
Westbrook House School 1955. Taken on the west side of the playing field. Summer wear: Light-blue short-sleeved
aertex shirts and light-blue ties, grey shorts with light blue "snake" buckled belt (anyone still got his?), grey socks and
brown sandals.

Peter Mellor - KNG Foster, Sports Day 1955 |
Westbrook House Sports Day
circa 1955. Ken Foster (Headmaster) speaks to the boys and parents following tea. A great headmaster who taught us all discipline
and fairness to others. I can pick out many familiar faces.

Peter Mellor Writes:
Dear David-Michael,
Photo shows KNG and Ted Foster walking past KNG's garage, with his
black Rover "HLM 892" inside, towards the playing fields. KNG has a hammer in hand presumably to make some repair to a fence
or whatever.
Second photo shows the Latin master "Guppy" Paxton with, from left
to right, Chris Menaul (now a film director) e.g. Prime Suspect, Forsyte Saga etc, John Cartridge (always making faces in
the school photos), Scott and White.
Taken in front of the playroom building.
Both about 1956.

Photo
07 shows my mate Charles Barlow and for some reason Sutcliffe rings a bell for the other person. The others are boring
but show scenes of the sports day, the PT master was Prof Mallard, ex marine and Olympic fencer (if my memory doesn't betray
me)
I think I must have been at Westbrook between 1956 - 61 ie.
8 - 13 yrs old.
Peter Mellor writes:
KNG speaking at the end of Sports Day in 1956, & "Dolly" Rogers
looking towards my camera in the gravel playground at the rear if the Senior School. Again in 1956.
The playroom features on the far left, the two ground floor bay windows
were the dining hall, kitchen to the left of these. 1st and 2nd Floors - mostly dormitories and bathrooms. I recall a fire
hoist for a person at a time could be lowered from the 2nd floor dorm window.
Kind regards

David-Michael Dunbar writes:
No school could ask for a finer gym instructor than Alfie Mallard.
He was a positive influence at Westbrook House; we can look back at our accomplishments
with pride...but could we have done it without his help?
